Energy commodities
ULSD, fuel oils and lubricants into mining, logistics and manufacturing accounts that already run SADC routes. Volume, spec and Incoterm first; preference margin second.
AfCFTA is not a slogan on this site. It is the legal rail we use when a fuel, a solar kit, a brick consignment or a medicine list has to cross a Southern African border.
What AfCFTA is
The African Continental Free Trade Area is the AU project to liberalise trade in goods and services among African states. Almost every AU member has signed. Zimbabwe has ratified. The goods protocol is in force. Tariff offers, rules of origin and customs practice are still catching up to the speeches.
The published architecture is simple: about 90% of tariff lines fall into the general liberalisation basket, about 7% are sensitive and come down more slowly, and about 3% stay excluded. Preferential duty is not automatic. The product must meet the rule of origin for its HS code — often a local or regional value-content test in the region of 40% — and travel with a certificate of origin.
SADC is not replaced. Where SADC or COMESA already gives a deeper preference between two neighbours, that preference still stands. AfCFTA is the wider net for corridors that SADC does not cover as cleanly.
GSN’s use of the rail
We are not a ministry and we do not issue certificates of origin. We design the commercial movement so those papers have something real to attach to.
ULSD, fuel oils and lubricants into mining, logistics and manufacturing accounts that already run SADC routes. Volume, spec and Incoterm first; preference margin second.
Solar kits, storage, pumps, dryers, cold rooms and monitoring moving as consignments, not as donated samples. Parts and training have to survive the same border.
Hemp, earth, bamboo composites, BIPV and water kits specified so a site in a second country can finish the job without a second air-freight panic.
Essential medicines, devices and clinic power. Cold-chain and documentation are the product. Intra-African pharma trade is still tiny; that is the gap, not a footnote.
How the rails connect
| Rail | What it means for a GSN brief |
|---|---|
| AfCFTA goods | Check preference, origin and the partner schedule before quoting a “duty-free” price. Use the official e-tariff book, not a blog. |
| Rules of origin | If the kit is assembled from extra-African parts, the preference may vanish. We say so before the invoice. |
| SADC / COMESA | Often the working preference on a Beitbridge, Chirundu or Plumtree run. Use the deeper deal where it exists. |
| Trade facilitation | Zimbabwe has a WTO Trade Facilitation path and is consolidating import/export rules. Paper still delays more loads than tariffs do. |
| PAPSS / settlement | The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System is meant to cut hard-currency hops. We still quote in the currency the supplier and the buyer can actually settle. |
| Women & youth | Female leadership and youth technicians inside the same chain that carries the goods — procurement, not a separate brochure. |
| Vision 2030 | Industrial energy access, local deployment and a Zimbabwe that is more than a pass-through. |
| Agenda 2063 | Infrastructure, intra-African trade and self-reliance as one programme, not three speeches. |
| UN SDGs | 1 poverty, 2 hunger, 3 health, 5 gender, 7 energy, 9 industry, 11 cities, 13 climate, 17 partnerships. |
Honest limits
Send the product list, HS codes if you have them, origin of the main components, origin and destination posts, and whether you already hold a certificate of origin. We will say whether AfCFTA, SADC or ordinary MFN is the honest path.
