Dry it in the sun, sell it in the week

Post-harvest loss is a climate story hiding in a basket.

Harvested produce

Farmers do not only lose money when the rains fail. They lose it when tomatoes collapse, when grain moulds, when mopane worms are smoked over a fire that also eats the woodland the worms need. Solar dryers sound modest. They are one of the highest-leverage devices in the rural economy.

In Gwanda, solar drying of mopane worms moved from a CTCN-supported pilot toward a policy conversation because it protected income and trees at the same time. That pattern repeats for chilli, herbs, fruit and seed. A dryer without a buyer is still just a warm box.

Why dryers stall — and how not to

GSN will specify and source drying and small processing power as part of an agriculture package. Describe the crop and the volumes.
